Notification of works at Eastern Creek Recycling Ecology Park

As part of our commitment to provide regular updates to residents and neighbours to our Eastern Creek Recycling Ecology Park regarding works and other site updates, we would like to notify the community of proposed drilling works expected to commence from 26 August 2024.

1. Scope of works expected to commence from 26 August 2024

As part of a 15-year Landfill Gas (LFG) agreement with LGI Limited (LGI), the LFG Power Generation project will see the installation of a 4 MW renewable energy power station at the Eastern Creek landfill site. This forms an important part of the company’s decarbonisation plan and will help in the production of renewable energy from our landfill.

Commencing on 26 August 2024, LGI will undertaking the deep drilling in the landfill to create new gas wells and maintain existing gas wells.

The drilling will take place over three stages. Each stage of works will take 4 to 5 weeks and will involve drilling approximately 20 gas wells (around 60 by the end of the 3 stages).

Approximate timeframes for the various stages are noted below. Dates for Stage 2 and 3 will be confirmed in the coming months:

  • Stage 1 of works – Expected to commence from Monday 26 August 2024 and conclude by Monday 30 September 2024
  • Stage 2 of works – Expected to take place between November 2024 and December 2024.
  • Stage 3 of works – Expected to commence from January 2025 and concluded by March 2025.

All works will be undertaken during operational hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays.

Please note, in the case of unfavourable weather conditions including high winds and rain, the works may be postponed. BINGO will provide a notification if this happens.

BINGO will also continue to provide regular updates to the community over the course of these works.

2. Why are the works needed?

The works are necessary to increase the extraction capacity for the landfill gas, to improve environmental outcomes for the Eastern Creek site and in preparation for commissioning of the power generation of the renewable energy power station, expected to be completed by early 2025. This forms an important part of the company’s decarbonisation plan and will help in the production of renewable energy from our landfill.

3.What is BINGO doing to prevent odour during the works?

Each well will be sealed after drilling works are completed, and we do not expect any odour in connection with these works. As a precaution, a mobile odour control spray unit will be used as an additional control for the duration of the works, to supplement our existing odour prevention measures.

As noted above, in the case of unfavourable weather conditions, the works will be postponed to a future date.

4. What should I do if I have an issue?

BINGO will continue to provide regular updates to the community over the course of these works.

If community members have any concerns, please call BINGO’s environmental hotline on 1300 032 747 or contact us.
